What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is Canada’s main federal immigration system for selecting skilled immigrants. It is not limited to a specific province, meaning you can live in Alberta and work in Toronto. Express Entry gives you the opportunity to immigrate to any part of Canada, except for the province of Quebec. The system includes several immigration streams (programs):

1.1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

• The key requirement is foreign work experience (outside Canada).
• To be eligible, you need to score at least 67 out of 100 points.
Advantage: You can get Permanent Residency (PR) without ever setting foot in Canada.
Disadvantage: The process is more complex, requires a strong set of documents, and proof of funds if you don’t have an LMIA.

1.3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

• For candidates with Canadian work experience in TEER 0–3 jobs.
• Required language level: English CLB 7/5 or French CLB 7+.
Fastest and most affordable program among all.
• Requires well-documented proof of employment.

1.4. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP via Express Entry)

• Provinces can select candidates directly from the Express Entry pool.
• If you receive a Notice of Interest and the province approves your nomination, you get +600 points to your CRS score.
• This almost guarantees you an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in the next draw.
• The process is longer and more expensive than CEC or FSW.

1.5. Category-Based Selection (Targeted Draws)

• This is not a separate program, but targeted selection rounds introduced by IRCC in 2023.
• Categories include: STEM, agriculture, transportation, healthcare, francophone applicants, and trades.
• You must be eligible for either CEC or FSW, and have at least 6 months of work experience in the targeted field.
Advantage: Lower CRS cut-off scores.
