How Can I Increase My Chances While in the Express Entry Pool?

A strategic guide to boosting your chances of receiving an ITA from IRCC

Increasing your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) from IRCC is a top priority for candidates in the Express Entry pool.

But how — and when — can you actually receive that long-awaited ITA?

All candidates in the Express Entry pool are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). This system assigns a score based on human capital factors such as age, education, work experience, and language proficiency.

Since each Express Entry draw is associated with a CRS cutoff score, increasing your CRS is one of the most effective ways to improve your chances of receiving an invitation.

How to Increase Your CRS Score

Candidates already in the Express Entry pool can improve their CRS score through the following strategies:

  1. Improve your proficiency in one of Canada’s official languages (English or French)
    • Even a 0.5-point increase in an IELTS or TEF result may affect multiple CRS areas.
  2. Upgrade your education
    • Obtain an additional diploma or get another foreign credential assessed through ECA to qualify for more education points (e.g., “two or more certificates”).
  3. Get a valid job offer
    • A supported job offer from a Canadian employer may provide an additional 50 or 200 points, depending on the position.
  4. Obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
    • An LMIA-backed offer strengthens your profile and can activate CRS job offer points.
  5. Secure a provincial nomination (PNP)
    • A nomination from a province immediately adds 600 CRS points, which almost guarantees an ITA regardless of your initial score.
  6. Increase relevant work experience
    • Additional years of full-time work in your primary NOC — especially Canadian work experience — can unlock further CRS or Skill Transferability points.
  7. Maximize spousal/common-law partner points
    • If your spouse or partner has language results, education, or Canadian work experience, you may receive extra CRS points.

In short, any improvement in your language skills, education, employment credentials, or spousal qualifications can help raise your CRS.

Additional Strategy: Category-Based Selection

In addition to general Express Entry draws, IRCC introduced category-based draws in 2023.

These target candidates with:

  • French-language proficiency (Francophone draws), or
  • Work experience in priority sectors like:
    • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math),
    • Healthcare,
    • Transport,
    • Agriculture,
    • Education,
    • Skilled trades.

In many of these draws, CRS cutoffs are lower — often ranging between 430 and 480 — making them an excellent opportunity for candidates who do not qualify for general draws.

Conclusion

  • Being in the Express Entry pool is only the first step.
  • To actually receive an ITA, you must strategically improve your CRS.
  • Consider upgrading your language test, getting additional education assessed, gaining more work experience, or pursuing a provincial nomination.
  • Don’t ignore category-based draws — they offer an excellent path with lower cutoffs for in-demand professions.

The key takeaway: active preparation beats passive waiting. Keep your Express Entry profile current, competitive, and aligned with Canada’s immigration priorities.
